7 Things I Hate Like Love Know About U
Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus aka TV’s Hannah Montana’s sophomore album released today. After selling out venue after venue on tour, and capturing the hearts of pre-teen girls (and prepubescent boys) across the country, Cyrus is back- edgier and funkier before.

Breakout is fully Cyrus rather than the dolled up Hannah Montana. She co-wrote all but two songs (both covers including Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun) on the album. Overall, it has much less of a country pop vibe than “Meet Miley Cyrus”.

“7 Things”, which is already getting a lot of airplay is a mash between slow tempo crooning country style vocals and a faster chorus, crunching out lyrics about an ex-boyfriend, presumably about Nick Jonas.

“Fly on the Wall” is reminiscent of earlier Britney Spears with a techno flair or a funkier version of the Pussy Cat Dolls with 80s ish rock in the background. “The Driveway” has a filler sound, and is also much less country than previous songs. “See You Again”, another track that has already gained popularity, was covered by indie rock band The Mae Shi before Breakout even released. (See our post on The Mae Shi cover). The song is catchy and flirty and I couldn’t help singing along on the second play of the CD. I will note that the beginning sounds like it has the 80s hit “I wear my sunglasses at night” sampled in.

It seems only natural to end with my critique of the track, “Goodbye”. No song named goodbye has ever won me over. Then again all i can remember are the Michelle Branch song and Alicia Keys songs. Oh and Jagged Edge - but don’t even get me started on that. Goodbye is a pop ballad, but doesn’t have quite the kick of the other more popular tracks or Cyrus’ previous album.
