Grammy Season is approaching and after we looked at the list of this year’s nominees we’ve made our selections as to who we think should win. I for one have lost all of my respect for the Grammys after the Black Eyed Peas won last year’s “Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal” with “My Humps”. Still, we’ll probably watch and you just might too. Here are some of the nominees and our choices.

Key: Sandhya’s Picks are in Red
Vivek’s Picks are in Blue
Mutual Picks are in Purple

Record of the Year

Chasing Pavements - Adele

Viva La Vida - Coldplay

Bleeding Love - Leona Lewis

Paper Planes - M.I.A

Please Read The Letter - Robert Plant & Alison Krauss

Pineapple express propelled M.I.A. into veritable super stardom. Paper Planes has pretty much been everywhere since including the wildly popular Slumdog Millionaire and even on a few Jay-Z remixes. At this point it’s not even a contest among these guys. M.I.A. has this in the bag.

Album Of The Year

Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends - Coldplay

Tha Carter III - Lil Wayne

Year of The Gentleman - Ne-Yo

Raising Sand - Robert Plant & Alison Krauss

In Rainbows - Radiohead

In Rainbows revolutionized the music industry right down to how how digital music is being sold. Not to mention it’s one of Radiohead’s best albums to date. Take that Lil Wayne.

Song Of The Year

American Boy- (Estelle Featuring Kanye West)

Chasing Pavements - (Adele)

I’m Yours - (Jason Mraz)

Love Song - (Sara Bareilles)

Viva La Vida - (Coldplay)

Kanye is at his best when he’s collaborating with someone else great. American Boy is no exception. Though we still think porn is not the best career choice for you Kanye.

Best New Artist

Adele

Duffy

Jonas Brothers

Lady Antebellum

Jazmine Sullivan

This is always a tough category to judge because each of the artists nominated are so different. In the end we had to go with Adele’s folksiness. Too bad for the Jo Bros.

Best Rock Instrumental Performance

Castellorizon - David Gilmour

Suicide & Redemption - Metallica

34 Ghosts I-IV - Nine Inch Nails

Hope (Live For The Art Of Peace) - Rush

Peaches En Regalia - Zappa Plays Zappa

Nine Inch Nails’ music was use to torture people at Guantanamo, proof that their music is irritating. Rush is a classy and talented band and their return to form has me pumped.

Don’t listen to Vivek. Nine Inch Nails pulled this record out mere months after their last one and it’s every bit just as good as anything they’ve done before.

Best Rock Song

Girls In Their Summer Clothes - (Bruce Springsteen)

House Of Cards - (Radiohead)

I Will Possess Your Heart - (Death Cab For Cutie)

Sex On Fire - (Kings Of Leon)

Violet Hill - (Coldplay)

Dear Radiohead, The Umbilical Chord loves you.

Best Rock Album

Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends - Coldplay

Rock N Roll Jesus - Kid Rock

Only By The Night - Kings Of Leon

Death Magnetic - Metallica

Consolers Of The Lonely - The Raconteurs

I’m not a huge Metallica fan but they are the only rock band nominated so by default they get the vote.

Kid Rock doesn’t even deserve to be a nominee in this category. Only By The Night is fresh and exciting. Kings of Leon deserves this win.

Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals

Viva La Vida - Coldplay

Waiting in the Weeds - Eagles

Going on - Gnarls Barkley

Won’t Go Home Without You - Maroon 5

Apologize - OneRepublic

I must defend my choice of Apologize simply because of Timberland’s background walrus sounds. They truly make the song.

I think Apologize is annoying. Vivek’s not swayed by this GB song. We both agree that every Eagles song sounds the same. (Personally I’d say the same thing about Coldplay.)

Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals

Lesson Learned - Alicia Keys & John Mayer

4 Minutes - Madonna, Justin Timberlake & Timbaland

Rich Woman - Robert Plant & Alison Krauss

If I Never See Your Face Again - Rihanna & Maroon 5

No Air - Jordin Sparks & Chris Brown

Plant and Krauss made a really classic genre bending album rife with melodies and vocal synergy. They deserve a reward for their craft so I give them the nod.

So long as No Air does not win I think we’ll live.

Best Dance Recording

Harder Better Faster Stronger - Daft Punk

Ready For The Floor - Hot Chip

Just Dance - Lady Gaga & Colby O’Donis

Give It 2 Me - Madonna

Disturbia - Rihanna

Black & Gold - Sam Sparro

Hot Chip doesn’t get even half the credit it deserves. They have some really wicked tracks with mad slick beats. Ready For the Floor is downright addictive. Harder Better Faster Stronger is also a solid track but half of its hype, this year, comes from the Kanye track, Stronger. Still Daft Punk is legendary.

Best Electronic/Dance Album

New York City - Brazilian Girls

Alive 2007 - Daft Punk

Bring Ya To The Brink - Cyndi Lauper

X - Kylie Minogue

Last Night - Moby

Robyn - Robyn

I really liked Alive 2007, but I also have this new found love for the Brazilian Girls. I’d say both are comparable, but New York City hasn’t gotten half the publicity that Alive has.

Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance

Gravity - John Mayer

I Saw Her Standing There - Paul McCartney

Girls In Their Summer Clothes - Bruce Springsteen

Rise - Eddie Vedder

No Hidden Path - Neil Young

Solid group of performers. The win, however, comes down to the song in question.

Best Alternative Music Album

Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals

Modern Guilt - Beck

Narrow Stairs - Death Cab For Cutie

The Odd Couple - Gnarls Barkley

Evil Urges - My Morning Jacket

In Rainbows - Radiohead

House Of Cards - Radiohead

Rock N Roll Train - AC/DC

Violet Hill - Coldplay

Long Road Out Of Eden - Eagles

Sex On Fire - Kings Of Leon

Comment: [See Album of the Year]

Why is Radiohead so good?

Best Rap Solo Performance

Roc Boys (And The Winner Is)… - Jay-Z

A Milli - Lil Wayne

Paris, Tokyo - Lupe Fiasco

N.i.*.*.e.r. (The Slave And The Master) - Nas

Sexual Eruption - Snoop Dogg

V: Ok everyone seems to be in love with Lil Wayne, god knows why, but my man Nas is actually saying something relevant on his track, unlike a milli.

S: Lies. Complete and total lies.

Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group

Royal Flush - Big Boi Featuring Raekwon And Andre 3000

Swagga Like Us - Jay-Z & T.I. Featuring Kanye West & Lil Wayne

Mr. Carter - Lil Wayne Featuring Jay-Z

Wish You Would - Ludacris Featuring T.I.

Put On - Young Jeezy Featuring Kanye West

Man it’s so nice to hear Outkast on a track again. Plus Dre lays down the best 16 of the year, no question.

There is so much overlap here. Kanye is mentioned twice, as are Jay- Z and Lil Wayne. Can we predict all of them will win?

Best Rap Album

American Gangster - Jay-Z

Tha Carter III - Lil Wayne

The Cool - Lupe Fiasco

Nas - Nas

Paper Trail - T.I.

Tha Carter III is going to win. Yeah.

Best Rap Song

Lollipop - (Lil Wayne Featuring Static Major)

Low - (Flo Rida Featuring T-Pain)

Sexual Eruption - (Snoop Dogg)

Superstar - (Lupe Fiasco Featuring Matthew Santos)

Swagga Like Us - (Jay-Z & T.I. Featuring Kanye West & Lil Wayne)

No one on the corner has swagger like us, and that’s why no one else is on the corner.

Note: All musicians are important but neither of us currently have the time to listen to the nominees for Best New Polka album just yet; however, if you have an opinion on any of the nominees for this or other categories, feel free to post them.

The Grammys air February 8, 2009 on CBS.
